Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate satisfied with drone inspections at shipping

marzec 06, 2023 09:05

Last year the Dutch Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate was able to identify eleven violations on sailing container ships with the help of drones. The Inspectorate is satisfied with the use of drones in shipping and will use them again in 2023.

According to the Inspectorate 44 inspections of sailing container ships took place last year. These checks were carried out using a drone. On 11 of these 44 sailing ships the Inspectorate found a violation such as not properly securing a container or cargo computers equipped with non-approved modules.

The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate sails along with the ships of the Dutch Coast Guard and has drones that contain small cameras. These cameras make images that can then be analysed. This method eliminates the need to call in a helicopter during routine checks. The Inspectorate has several years of experience with the use of drones during inspections. A drone pilot project was launched in 2021 and reportedly was successful. In 2023 drones will again be used during checks.
